Making Video Games has a free game programming section where you can learn to make games.  You will actually start making games by making your own RPG from scratch.

The following video gives you a good idea what to expect: you’ll start by learning how to create click and drag inventory and actions management. The basics are integrated into the opening chapter. There are currently three chapters. Note that it isn’t meant to be pretty. This isn’t about graphics just yet.

 There is also a section on making games that make money.  You will not only learn to make games, but how to make games popular by building a website that ranks high on search engines!
