Making Video Games (.com) is about creating games with better programming tutorials, and learning independent game development (make money with games & possibly make it your job).
Any beginner can create a game website that makes money in a couple of hours and concentrate on learning the skills to make the game they always wanted to.
Learn programming to create games.
You can make games that sell with Game Maker.
GM is a powerful game making tool that you can use to create just about any type of game. You can even make it shareware and hook it up to a payment form to sell unlock codes online.
The tutorials on this site work from scripting examples that work in a game. Each tutorial is based on a specific theme (like the if statement, loops, arrays…) but digging in to the code will teach you a lot more than what the tutorial is actually about.
The first Game Maker tutorial teaches you how GM functions so that you make an architecture that works (set off actions using the right event so that something actually happens instead of having a blank screen).
Create games with text menus.
This is one of the programming tutorials. Once you’ve gotten the basics (ie - you’ve gotten something to appear on the screen, you understand the event to actions principle, using controller objects and the game loop), this tutorial allows you to give choices to your players using keyword_wait(), io_clear(), the if statement (further explained in another tutorial) while working with the game loop and variables.
Create games with 3D perspective.
With these fundamentals, you can create many types of games already. Swords and Sorcery is a 3D perspective game inspired by the pioneer in 3D perspective gaming, the first of the Might and Magic series (the Secret of the Inner Sanctum). Tutorials use code from this game to illustrate. Further tutorials will teach you more about the techniques used in creating this game so that you can make your own.
Create games as an indie pro.
The Game Creator’s Career Course gives you the tools and knowledge to build your first money-making game website (complete with games to download for your visitors and revenue strategies that work). It also provides all the knowledge an indie needs to know besides programming.
You’ll avoid the mistake people who want to create games for money make all the time. Everyone tries to learn to program first (plus graphics, storyboarding, sound, music…) Going this way sets you up to have your first decent project up in 2-5 years due to the fact that, like most people, the time you have to dedicate to learning and practicing is limited.
Chances are your first game will “miss its market”, and you’ll have done it all for nothing.
Succeeding in this field requires that you get your first game site up fast. When you’re in business, you have time to learn to create “that perfect game”.
About me.
This is an about page so here goes for a few words about myself. I’ve been learning software since 2002, year when I started work on zPlanner. I’ve since created several projects like Nessie, zCoach and Swords and Sorcery.
My current projects include the next version of Swords, which will include a bit more color, and a strategy game that remains untitled as of now.
Creating those games with GM gives me the material to make great tutorials based on real scripts that work in real games so I’ll have more on the site on a regular basis.
I live in Paris, France in Europe, real close to one of the world’s best karate dojos in the 14th district.
